Bath Startups and Students: Understanding Enterprise Support
How University of Bath students can join enterprise activities, work towards a digital badge and try shopkeeping, with a separate application route for support after graduation.

University of Bath students can join Enterprise Bath’s Entrepreneurship Programme before they have a business idea. Joining, earning its digital badge and applying for support after graduation involve different commitments. For anyone deciding where to begin, those distinctions matter more than having a polished pitch.[3]
Start With Enterprise Bath
The University provides support for businesses, researchers and students through its Innovation and Enterprise activities. Enterprise Bath is the university department offering students advice, mentors, workshops, competitions and networking through an extra-curricular programme. Its student information addresses both undergraduates and postgraduates, including those interested in testing a research idea or developing entrepreneurial skills for employment.[2][3]
To join the Entrepreneurship Programme, follow the Microsoft Teams group link on the University’s student enterprise page. You can sign up at any stage of the academic year, including while you’re still looking for an idea. Use the group to check upcoming events rather than assuming every workshop follows the same timetable.[3]
What Earning the Digital Badge Involves
The Entrepreneurship Programme runs each academic year. Its digital badge can be added to LinkedIn to show completion, but workshop attendance is only one requirement. The University sets out five things participants must do:[3]
- Attend at least five Enterprise Bath workshops.
- Work with a programme mentor on a business idea.
- Complete both the pre-programme and post-programme surveys.
- Submit a business plan.
- Deliver a pitch to an expert business panel or at one of the programme’s competitions.
If you want the badge, plan around the work between events as well as the workshops themselves. Mentoring requires an idea to discuss, the business plan needs writing, and the pitch needs preparation. The University runs workshops covering sections of the business plan, so you can develop it through the programme.[3]
Joining without an idea is explicitly welcomed. Completing the badge requirements takes you further: by the end, you must have worked on an idea with a mentor and presented a plan to others.[3]
The Pop-Up Shop Programme Tests Decisions in a Real Shop
The Pop-Up Shop Programme gives students a practical retail challenge in Bath city centre. Applications for the 2026 programme are closed. The University invites expressions of interest for 2026–27, which is an initial enquiry rather than a confirmed application or an allocated shop day.[3][5]
Students from any course can take part, and you can express interest individually before a team is formed. Teams must eventually contain five to seven students. An expert panel selects four teams, considering their applications, pitches and teamwork. Each selected team receives mentoring to prepare its business plan and marketing campaign.[5]
Each successful team receives a £500 loan and the shop keys for 24 hours, including setup time. The University says the loan is repaid from shop profits and is written off if the team makes a loss or cannot break even. The winning team keeps its profit. Read the published terms before planning purchases, including the condition that goods bought with the loan belong to the University unless sold during the trading day.[5]
The commitment continues after trading. Participants must attend the reflection and learning workshops as part of the programme’s three stages. Those sessions examine decisions and strategy, while Careers workshops help students explain the experience in applications, on their CV and on LinkedIn. Check your availability for that follow-up work before agreeing to run the shop.[5]
Where the Enterprise Lab Fits
The Enterprise Lab was announced in November 2022 as a campus space for students and researchers developing business, product and service ideas. The University’s current description places it on the top floor of East Building.[1][4]
Its activities include one-to-one mentoring, specialist advice, startup workshops and networking. The space also has hotdesking for quiet or collaborative work and private meeting rooms described as available to reserve. Ask the Enterprise team at enterprise@bath.ac.uk about access and room arrangements before planning a visit.[4][5]
For Bath businesses outside the student programme, the distinction between venues matters. The campus Enterprise Lab complements the University’s city-centre Innovation Centre, which supports local startup and growing businesses with a focus on high-tech and high-growth small and medium-sized enterprises. Student programme participation does not establish access to every University business service.[2][4]
The Final-Year Route Towards Support After Graduation
The University identifies a specific next step for students who have completed the Entrepreneurship Programme and are in their final year: they can apply for the Alumni Innovation Award to support their business idea after graduation. Completion creates an application route. It does not promise an award.[3]
If you’re approaching your final year, ask Enterprise Bath how the award application fits your remaining programme work. If you’re just starting, join the Teams group through the University’s student enterprise page and choose an event that helps you develop or test an idea.[3]
